July 11th -- Big6 and other Information Literacy Models

I presented an overview of the Big6 and a few other information problem-solving models. I provided a sneak preview of the Universal Planning Tool, which will be used to plan lessons that integrate information and technology literacy skills. (Next Thursday, the 20th, teams of 3-4 participants will go through the process of plannning a "mini-unit.") Some National and State ITL standards were previewed (Information Power and State of Connecticut). The Big6 www.big6.com was looked at in some detail, as well as Carol Kulthau's Information Search Process http://library.humboldt.edu/ic/general_competency/kuhlthau.html and REACTS (Barbara Stripling and Judy Pitts) http://eduscapes.com/info/pitts.html. Many other models were shown and the links can be found on our BlackBoard site. A ridiculously giant packet of "generic" activities was given as a handout, and we only covered a teeny-tiny miniscule portion of them (Trash 'n' Treasure for step 4; and rubric creation for step 6). Please look at the packet and if you have any questions, put them in a comment on this blog, e-mail me or ask them next Thursday, the 20th!

I have used the Big6 model in class for research projects and find it is great to have a model to work from. At the high school level, I find that most of my students have not been "trained" to use any model well so I find it a bit challenging. I have found that breaking a process (model) down to small parts and focusing on each step works well.

Thanks for the presentation. Like Peggy I had never heard of the Big 6.

During your presentation I noticed on the GFS website a listing for a TV show. I tried to check it out at home but couldn't find the link.

Bill- thanks for the presentation as I too am not familiar with the Big 6 Method. I can't wait to try Trash 'N Treasure with my 2nd graders since we love highlighters too! :) Torrie

Well, I still don't know if I'm on here, but I tried.
I thought the MC presentation was terrific, in part because Meryl never preached, but was calm and direct. She presented herself as involved in the process right along with us which made a difference too. Bill's presentation on the Big 6 parallels what I have been learning about UBD curriculum development. It takes a bit of getting used to but becomes second nature after a while. In any case, I believe that the questions are almost always more important than the answers. Thank you, Bill
